The Elelenwo Girls Are Back On Board

The Elelenwo Girls Are Back on Board
There is something about returning to a place where something real happened. When the Promoting Queens team walks into Elelenwo Girls Community School every other week, it no longer feels like showing up to run a program, it feels like continuing a conversation that started long before we arrived and will continue.

What the Sessions look like
The Girls Are Teaching Each Other Now: Two of our students showed up early on a session day, not because anyone called them, not because there was an incentive or an assignment; they came because new girls were joining the chess class that day. Somewhere between the last session and this one, they had quietly decided someone should make sure those girls feel welcome.
So they set up the boards, sorted the pieces, and by the time everyone else arrived, the room was already ready. Not because the facilitators set it up, but because two teenagers did.
That makes the whole dream matter all the more.

Elelenwo GCCC meets every other week to learn the game of chess and it's lessons to life from their facilitators and now the sessions have stopped feeling like something we bring to the girls they feel like something the girls have taken over. The girls know what they are here to do and more than that, they have started deciding how and putting what they are learning into practice.

Who Keeps Showing Up

These girls are not required to be here, They choose to.
After school weeks, after chores, after everything else life in Elelenwo asks of them they still always show up. We start to recognise them not just by face but by how they play. The girl who defends every position like she has something to protect, the one who attacks early and is slowly, reluctantly learning that patience is also a weapon, to the one who lost several games in a row and came back the next session quieter, more deliberate like she had gone home and had a conversation with herself.

They keep showing up and making sure others do too.

What Is Growing

Promoting Queens was built on one belief: that chess is more than a game, it is a tool for empowerment, education, and leadership. That’s what we're building in our Elelenwo Girls, their Confidence is growing. Girls who once second-guessed every move are committing now. When asked to explain a decision, they do that with confidence. They are learning, move by move, that having a reason matters more than being right, that thinking for yourself is not arrogance, it is the whole point.

We envision a world where every girl, regardless of her background, can harness the transformative power of chess to conquer the world. That vision is not distant. It is the two girls, deciding that the new girls deserve a warm welcome and doing something about it.

What We Are Carrying Forward

The sessions continue, the games get harder but the lessons never stop. The girls who have been here from the start are playing in ways that surprise even themselves, holding complex positions, thinking further ahead, losing without crumbling, and winning without cruelty.

Promoting Queens was built on the belief that chess is more than a game that it is a tool for building girls who lead fearlessly and reshape their futures.

And we are just getting started.

The Elelenwo girls do not need much. They need the boards to keep showing up. They need the sessions to continue. They need to know that the world outside that room believes in what is growing inside it.

Sponsor a girl. Support a session.
