Stop Two: A Chessboard in the Middle of Central Park

Stop one taught us something we did not expect. A chessboard in a public park does not just attract chess players. It attracts everyone.
So for stop two, we carried the boards into Central Park, set up at the Chess and Checkers House, and waited to see who the city would send our way.
The city sent the whole world.
Strangers From Everywhere
Central Park is full of tourists on any given day, and this Saturday was no different. People from France sat down. People from Bolivia sat down. People from Germany sat down. Most of them had no idea what Promoting Queens was. They just saw a board, an open seat, and someone willing to play.
One man told us chess reminded him of his grandfather. He had not played in years, and for a few minutes, sitting across that board, he was not just playing a stranger. He was somewhere back in time with someone he loved.
A girl told us she had stopped playing chess for a long time, until she lost her brother. Chess was the one thing they still had between them, the one place she could still feel close to him. She sat down that day and played, and we have not stopped thinking about the way she said it.
Strangers who had never met left that board as something else entirely. That is the part of these afternoons no one can plan for.

Why This Matters

None of this happens by accident. For over three years, Promoting Queens has believed in what a chessboard can hold, thanks to coaches who kept showing up and volunteers who gave their time so that somewhere in Nigeria, somewhere in Kenya, a girl could sit down and discover something in herself she had not known was there.
This summer, for the first time, we took that belief out of the classroom and into the parks. Central Park showed us exactly why that mattered. Chess is social. It gets people who have never met to sit across from each other and actually connect, and every one of these afternoons is also how we raise the funds to reach more girls with this work.

What's Next

Central Park was stop two of four. We are heading back to where this all began, Washington Square Park, this Sunday, August 30. We have been there before, but this time, we intend to make it one to remember.
Thank you to everyone who sat down, played, gave, or shared a piece of themselves with a stranger that day. Afternoons like that remind us exactly why we started this, and they make us want to bring it to more parks, more strangers, more stories waiting to happen.
